Darrell Ang, Conductor Laureate

Winner of the 50th Besançon International Young Conductor's Competition in 2007, he was awarded the Grand Prix by the distinguished jury which included Michel Plasson and Yan-Pascal Tortelier, the ‘Prix du Public' as audience favourite, as well as the top vote of the musicians of the competition orchestra, the Orchestre national d'île-de-France. He is also the winner of the ‘9th Antonio Pedrotti International Competition for Conductors' in Trento, Italy in 2006, and most recently of the ‘Arturo Toscanini Competition', 2008.

Born in Singapore, he studied with the composer Leong Yoon-Pin and played the violin, piano and bassoon. He later graduated summa cum laude from the Orchestral & Operatic Conducting classes at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and subsequently from Yale University in the USA. He has also participated in masterclasses with Jorma Panula, Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel and Neeme Järvi. He has appeared with orchestras around the world, including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra (Katowice), the Orquestra de Cadaqués, the ‘Orchestra Haydn di Trento e Bolzano', the Residentie Orkest in The Hague, the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the National Arts Centre of Canada and the Orquestra Filarmónica de la UNAM (Mexico).

In 2001, he co-founded the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic and was a frequent guest-conductor at the St. Petersburg Opera, as well as the Rimsky-Korsakov State Opera & Ballet Theatre, working closely with soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre Academy of Young Singers. Beginning with the 2008-2009 season, he will take the Yale Symphony Orchestra to Carnegie Hall and is scheduled to make his débuts as well as return appearances with some of the most important European orchestras, including the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre de Besançon, the Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, the Orchestre Régional de Cannes, the Orchestre Lamoureux, the Orchestre de l'Opera Toulon, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Strasbourg, as well as the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Filarmonica "Arturo Toscanini", the Orchestre Regionale dell'Emiglia Romagna, the Orquestra Simfònica de Belears, the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra,
Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira, the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra del Lazio of Rome, the Orchestra della Toscana, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra of Madrid, the Singapore Lyric Opera and return visits to the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra - where he has been appointed ‘Young Associate Conductor'.
